Neither the painting nor the short story advanced by much distance yesterday. They're both in that vague, hard-to-define middle stage, where things are looking good, but there's still a ways to go, and instead of making a few leaps on the barely-touched parts, I keep picking at the existing parts, getting them closer to "done." It's not perfectionism – all of the work I've done needs to be done. But I've GOT to sketch in a better look at the ending of this story, and I've GOT to block in some sense of the background on this painting.
Smudge is full of beans; she got her appetite stimulant today. One of these days I'm going to catch that meyow on video or audio. When that day comes, I promise I'll share. It's a mighty thing to behold. In other news, my friend's mother sent me a hat! I love it. I think it goes very nicely with this coat and the scarf my cousin made. And that's all for today,

Smudge takes up a new role guarding the internets (as a fur-wall?), the Oranges just keep oranging, and our feral friend grows increasingly friendlier. Not much creativity happened this weekend aside from the itch to write ALL THE THINGS (well, three right now) growing, some catching up on my writer's crit group stuff, and dishing with some writer friends at a small gathering. Everything else took a back seat to getting this blog set up and rolling. That counts as a major creative accomplishment, right? With all (or most) of the details settled, I can concentrate on making this fun. Sign up for email updates at the tab below or on the "ELSEWHERE" page if you want to stay in touch. I'll be sure to share links from Facebook about various updates as well.
The past 3 days went to the dogs – two of them literally.
I'm working on a commission, a pet portrait of 2 dogs. Things seemed to be going fine Wednesday until I realized I really needed the painting to be bigger than what I had. So I started not quite from scratch the next day. I thought I might finish it in the afternoon after getting this blog rolling, but this took up much more of the day and many more decisions than I thought it would. And I don't have as much decision power since the accident, which is probably what resulted in the painting-size flub. This all piles up to mean I haven't written in days, and that the short story I'm really trying to wrap up will have to wait a little longer. Under normal conditions, I would power through and still try to get something done on it. I am a firm believer in showing up and putting in the time, But I also know how my still-recovering brain reacts when I push it after it tells me I shouldn't. It's taken a lot for me to come around to realizing I'm not under normal conditions, and it still may be a while. But in all that painting, I did get to totally plow through Mur Lafferty's Ghost Train to New Orleans on audiobook. It took a while after the accident before I was able to 'do' those two things at once again – listen and paint. More on that some other time. In the wake of an extended period of hiatus and spotty behavior over at my Amazing Stories blog, I am re-committing to this crazy little thing called blogging. But I'm approaching it with a different, renewed perspective and a shift in my goals.
I will continue my blog at Amazing Stories with its focus on creativity, and I aim to get that to 2x per month consistently again – that may mean slightly recycled content from here from time to time. But here, I'm going to blog about anything and everything, in typically shorter posts – daily. Well, daily for weekdays, at any rate – I'll take the weekends off for now. Content will include but not be limited to:
I think the challenge in my other blogging adventures came from trying to focus on one area– perhaps too hard. Also, I've tried to keep them somewhat professional. Fear not, that will not be the case here. I'm aiming for more "uncut" and off-the-cuff here. So join me, subscribe, I'll share links at Facebook, and I'll have a way to sign up for newsletters shortly. But not today. Figuring out how I wanted to do this thing and then doing this thing has taken up more than enough decision-making for one day. |
